Endemic to Cuba and needs full sun, a very spiny palm which should be taken into consideration when choosing a location  and one of two palms known as “Cuban belly palm”  due to its swollen trunk and distinct bulge near the center of the stem… Its very slow growing when young but can shoot up with almost alarming speed once established. A striking and unusual palm making it  ideal for adding spice and variety to the palm garden.
